If your liner has textured sidewalls, you may need to sand down small high spots where the rail clamps contact the bed wall to ensure a flush mount.
The canister occupies approximately 12 inches of bed length directly behind the cab. For a 6.5-foot bed, this leaves you with roughly 5.5 feet of usable bed space when the cover is fully retracted. If you need to reclaim that space for a toolbox or other accessory, we offer a canister relocation bracket that shifts the housing forward by 6 inches.
The cylinder lock engages hardened steel pins on both bed rails simultaneously, creating a rigid frame that resists prying. The trickiest part is aligning the canister to the cab wall and ensuring it's level before tightening the clamp brackets. Having a second person to hold the rails steady while you fasten the clamps can speed things up, but it's not mandatory if you work carefully.
Lubricate the rail tracks with silicone spray every six months—this keeps the roller wheels gliding without friction. Wash the slat surface regularly to prevent dirt from caking in the interlocking seams, and inspect the canister drain holes quarterly to ensure water can escape. Avoid using petroleum-based cleaners on the rubber seals, as these can cause the EPDM material to degrade over time.
As long as your hitch mounts 18 inches or more behind the cab wall, the retracted canister should clear it without interference. Most factory fifth-wheel prep kits and aftermarket gooseneck installations fall within this range. If your hitch sits closer to the cab, you'll need the canister relocation bracket to shift the housing forward and maintain clearance.
